Ethereum NFT collectibles platform Veve has launched its new VeVe Comics platform and digital comic book reader, the company said on Thursday. The first batch of comic books hails from industry juggernaut Marvel Comics.
With Marvel as its launch partner, VeVe said fans now have access to over 300 new Marvel digital issues, including those based on heroes like Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain Marvel, and Black Panther. New comic books will be added the same day they are available in print and will include panel-by-panel viewing; the company claims each page was digitally converted by hand.
What makes VeVe’s comic book platform different from buying digital comics on Amazon or the now-defunct Comixology? In addition to the standard digital comic books, which cost the same as the print and digital copies available elsewhere, VeVe also sells limited-edition NFT versions.
The limited edition NFT versions are available in various rarity levels, each with a unique edition number. These NFTs—minted on the Ethereum scaling network Immutable X—can also be resold on the Veve marketplace, include up to five different comic book covers, and can be read in an augmented reality experience on the VeVe app.
The limited edition comics are about $3 more expensive on average than the standard digital versions, which are not tokenized as NFTs.
“Being passionate readers and collectors ourselves, we recognized that digital comics fans have been calling for a more immersive experience,” VeVe CEO David Yu said in a statement. “Our aim is to create a platform that makes comics discovery fun and easy—one centered on function and design, [and] fosters community and accessibility for all.”
The VeVe comic book app is free to download on iOS and Android. VeVe users can access the NFT marketplace and Comics app with the same account. VeVe said the Marvel Comics integration is just the beginning of its alliance with various brands in the comic book industry.
Founded in 2018, VeVe specializes in digital collectibles from a variety of major entertainment brands, including Marvel, DC Comics, Disney, and beyond. Immutable X is best known as a gaming network used for NFTs for games such as Gods Unchained and Guild of Guardians.
