Here’s What Brave’s New Web3 Call Feature Can Do

NFT

  • Brave has unveiled a new feature of its video calling product Brave Talk.
  • The new feature uses NFTs to control access to calls.
  • Brave Talk plans to change live events and video calls.

Projects are still finding new and exciting use cases for NFTs, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the digital realm with these assets. This time, Brave, a privacy-focused web3 browser, is at the forefront of a revolution, introducing a new application for NFTs: Token-gated Video calls.

Brave looks to shake up the video calling and live event industry by integrating NFTs into the fabric of video calls and redefining how users engage online.

Unveiling Brave Talk

Popular Web3 browser Brave has unveiled a new token-gating feature for its video calling product, Brave Talk. The new web3 feature enables call hosts to use NFTs and Proof of Attendance Protocol NFTs (POAPs) to limit access, configure avatars, assign moderator permissions, and more.

With this feature, Brave ushers in a new era of video calling and live events by creating the world’s first-ever fully integrated Web3 live event platform that seamlessly integrates browser, wallet, and video capabilities.

Brave’s Web3 calling feature introduces a new level of functionality and security regarding user authentication and authorization by leveraging token-gated access. In contrast, video-calling solutions like Zoom and Google Meet still rely on passwords to control access. Brave Talk mimics real-life ticket-gated entry through the new feature using NFTs as tickets.

Token-gating is a significant achievement for Brave Talk. Communities and projects can now hold members-only events for token holders, reward loyal fans, set up NFT auctions, and more.

Although the feature is only compatible with Ethereum-based NFTs, specifically ERC-721 NFTs, the possibilities are endless, all thanks to the Token-gating mechanism.

What is Token-gating?

Token-gating is one of the primary ways users can control access in Web3, and it comprises two parts: authentication and authorization.

In the authentication phase, users’ wallet addresses are verified using the SIWE (Sign-In with Ethereum) protocol for Web3 authentication. The system sends a message to the wallet address. Users sign the message using their address and return it to the sender for verification.

In the authorization phase, the token-gating system checks users’ wallets if it passes the requirements. The requirement can be having a certain NFT, token, or membership to join the call.

Brave’s new Web3 calling feature will shake up video calling and live events because it’s very simple to use given that most Web3 protocols are relatively tricky to use because of their UI.

How to Use Brave’s New Web3 Calling Feature

Note that only users with a Premium Talk subscription can access the new feature. Once you’re subscribed to Premium Talk, here’s how you can access Brave’s new web3 calling feature.

  • Open the Brave Browser.
  • Click Host a Web3 Call.
  • Authenticate your identity using your Web3 wallet.
  • Once verified, you can choose an NFT as an avatar and specify who gets to participate in the call.

Brave Talk’s new feature is still very experimental. The privacy browser has shared that it plans to use feedback from current users’ experiences to optimize future versions. Brave has many features lined up for the future, which could roll out later this year.

We’re excited to introduce a Web3 calls option for Brave Talk! Brave Talk Web3 calls allow hosts to use NFTs and POAPs to token-gate access.

What’s Next for Web3 Brave Talk?

Although NFT-gated Brave Talk is only open to premium users, the browser company has shared that it plans to open the feature to all users. Brave added that it’s currently testing features like support for non-Ethereum NFTs, token-gating for owners of a particular token, token-gating based on past ownership, and sending cryptocurrencies to participants.

On the Flipside

  • Brave shared that it surpassed over 50 million monthly active users in 2023.
  • The privacy-focused browser introduced support for Solana dApps on iOS and Android versions of Brave.

Why This Matters

Brave’s new web3 calling feature is groundbreaking and opens doors for many new possibilities. With its token-gated system, it could revolutionize web3 live events, concerts, and more and propel NFT and Web3 adoption in the right direction.
